2011 Report and 2012 Plan

Dear Hope Nicaragua Supporters,

Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ!

God’s abundant grace enabled Hope Nicaragua mission to finish 2011 with thanksgiving. We are especially thankful to you for supporting and partnering our mission with overflowing prayers and love. New ministries, as well as changes in the old, have taken place in 2011.

We began the Children’s Care Program at our Mercado Oriental Mission Center in Managua. There are many children in the Mercado Oriental area who are neglected and are in need of our care. The Center started to care for about 10 children at the beginning of 2011 and the number has grown into an average of 30-40 children who seek the center daily. We provide breakfast and lunch in order to fill their physical hunger; fulfill their spiritual needs through sharing Bible stories; and support their character development through our dedicated teachers’ nurture and care. The children have weekly music, art and Tae Kwon Do lessons. We hope and pray that through this ministry, our Mercado children will avoid the bondage of drug, alcohol and prostitution and instead grow up with God’s love and vision for their lives.

We are excited and hopeful about the Local Pastor Training Ministry. One year ago, we began this ministry with the hope and purpose of growing Nicaraguan churches spiritually through biblical, theological and ministry training. Six professors from theological schools in Managua were invited as teachers, producing 11 graduates at the first level last year. We already have 60 local pastors registered for this year’s training program. We believe that this ministry is of utmost importance for the health and growth of the Nicaraguan churches and we will continue to seek God’s guidance as we move forward.

Our Providence Medical Clinic Ministry, in its fourth year of operation and its second year at the current location, has accomplished much and all of us are very grateful. Through our women’s cancer program, we screened over 200 women for breast and pelvic cancers. This program helps to provide early detection and cure for the number one cause for death among the women under the age of sixty. In conjunction with the cancer screening program, we began the health check-up ministry for the local public elementary school children. Good health of the youngsters is important for the future growth of this country. Although health checkups are important, we are grateful that we are given the opportunity to share the gospel while visiting the local public schools.
The clinic also provides periodic check-ups for the prostitutes in the Mercado Oriental area and hold weekly Bible study for these women so that they may learn and see God’s love for them.

We continued our Children’s Feeding Ministry in impoverished neighborhoods. Three churches outside of Managua area host the feeding program, providing lunch to 250 children daily. With the cooperation from another mission organization called the Samaritans International; this program provides the children with a hot meal a day. Please pray that this ministry will continue in 2012 despite possible cuts from the Samaritans International due to decreased sponsorship.

The Jehovah Jireh Church in El Paraiso area is finding stability under the dedicated leadership of Pastor Roberto. When we first began our ministry there four years ago, it was truly a deserted land
without water or electricity. By providing water through several wells, we have seen El Paraiso transform into a vibrant community with electricity and other amenities; and we hope each household will soon have running water. What a blessing it is to witness a tremendous change in this community!

We ask for your special prayers as we make plans for the following 3 areas in 2012:

First, the Providence Medical Clinic needs to expand because the current building is not sufficient to serve our patients effectively. We need to add several more rooms. Please pray for a good architect and builders to be hired, as well as clear vision and faith for the ministry.

Secondly, the Local Pastor Training Ministry with 60 registered pastors will begin on February 4th. They will meet every Saturday for 6 hours for the next 50 weeks at our Mercado Oriental Mission Center. Please pray for Pastor Ortega and Pastor Maltes who are in charge of running the program and volunteer professors from local seminary who will provide the instructions. Pray that through this ministry, the Nicaraguan churches will stand strong with God’s almighty power.

Thirdly, we ask you to pray for the new Scholarship Program. In the past, our education ministry was primarily made through the Presbyterian Mission School. However, in response to some sponsors’ request and new God given vision, we plan to commence a new Scholarship Program which will be used as a tool to mentor and produce the future leaders of Nicaragua. Initially, the students will be chosen from among the highly motivated children in the Mercado Oriental area, and they will be sent to reputable private schools to obtain good education. But more importantly, in addition to providing the financial assistance for their education, we will seek to help them grow spiritually and emotionally through bi-weekly worship, Bible study, and mentoring. Through this scholarship program, the children will embrace the gospel in their hearts and be empowered to achieve their dreams. More details and prayer requests will follow as we launch this program soon.

We would like to thank you again for your prayers and support. We know that all of our ministries in Nicaragua are possible because of your encouragement, financial support, and prayers.

May God’s grace and blessings be abundant in the year of our Lord 2012!

With Love from Nicaragua,

Matthew and Jennifer Jun
