Hope Nicaragua and Latin America

Mercado Oriental’s Center for Women and Children Project I have been serving the homeless at Mercado Oriental, the commercial district of Managua, since 2005. It is the largest open market in Central America and is considered as one of the most dangerous area of Nicaragua. The U.S. Embassy prohibits its employees to enter the area. Many indicate that the life in the market is more than difficult. The area is permeated with those addicted to drugs and alcohol. Many are out of hope, out of love, and out of resources. They fill their emptiness with substances. Their choice of drug is industrial grade glue: It’s cheap and readily available. Women sell their body to earn whatever they can, from foods to a few dollars. The area lacks love and hope. Most are looking, looking, and looking without much success. These are the people whom our homeless center, el Centro Esperanza, serves. We have been here
