Mercado Oriental’s Center for Women and Children Project
I have been serving the homeless at Mercado Oriental, the commercial district of Managua, since 2005. It is the largest open market in Central America and is considered as one of the most dangerous area of Nicaragua. The U.S. Embassy prohibits its employees to enter the area. Many indicate that the life in the market is more than difficult. The area is permeated with those addicted to drugs and alcohol. Many are out of hope, out of love, and out of resources. They fill their emptiness with substances. Their choice of drug is industrial grade glue: It’s cheap and readily available. Women sell their body to earn whatever they can, from foods to a few dollars. The area lacks love and hope. Most are looking, looking, and looking without much success.
These are the people whom our homeless center, el Centro Esperanza, serves. We have been here for 2 years and 10 month. The other missionaries told us that ministry to this type of people will not last long, and advised us to ‘not get involved’. Of course these people are hopeless; no one has shown the true Hope.
It’s so true that the ministry would not have lasted this long if God’s direct-involving presence and His people of faith didn’t co-exist. Our God is the good God. Our God does know how fragile we are. Therefore, God sends people to encourage, sharing their blessings, to challenge, and to pray. We are weak, but our God is strong. We are poor, but our good God is rich. God is our high mountain to look up in times of hopelessness. God is our Refuge. God is our home, the eternal one.
Only with God’s help, I have been able to do this ministry this far. Now, the good God is calling to have compassion for the women and children on the street corners. Sometimes, they come to the center in the mornings with bruises here and there. When I ask what happened, they casually say they were raped. That’s all. No more conversation. It makes me feel dumb. I know why I feel this way. I should have known it. I should have said ‘I am sorry’ even before asking the question.
Finally, what I have been afraid of has arrived. Hysel in her early 20’s was raped by 5 men and was beaten afterwards. She never got up, so we had to lay her in a cheap coffin, made by leftover wood panels in the market. This was not the first death this year. We have to do something. We need to provide a place to protect women and children. The Center for Women and children would greatly help them. If we can save one life a year, it’s worth a million. In fact, it will do a lot more: They will know the true Hope in Christ.
The Price of the property: USD 35,000 asking price, negotiable.
Area of Construction: 130 mt sq. (2 storied building-1st story for children care center during the day time, 2nd story for 4 rooms and 2 communal bathrooms for 20 people.)
Construction cost: 350 USD per square meter (estimated). Its cost: USD 45,500.
Furnishing cost: USD 10,000
Total cost of the project: USD 90,500
Note: This project will only need the maintaining and utility costs to actively maintain. Two staff will work for the center. The monthly projected cost for the center is around USD 600.
