Mercado Oriental 시장의 화재

<---- 8월 1일에 있었던 대형 화재

너무나 가슴이 아픕니다. 금요일 새벽 2시 부터 시작한 불이 금요일 오후 5시나 되어서 끝났습니다. 아침 7시에 친구가 전화가 왔습니다. '너희 무숙자 사역장과 클리닉은 괞찮으냐?' 하는 질문에 심장이 잠시 중단되는 것을 느꼈습니다. 바로 테레비를 틀고 보니 난리가 났더군요. 우리 사역장들이 자리를 잡고 있는 Mercado Oriental이 타고 있었습니다. 무서운 불길이 하늘을 향해 타오르고 있었고, 까만 연기가 온 하늘을 가리고 있었습니다. 많은 사람들이 물건들을 들고 뛰면서 소리 지르고 있었고, 소방관들과 경찰들이 이리 저리 뛰면서 불을 끌려고 애쓰는 장면들이 스쳐갔습니다.
우리 사역장과 똑같은 길가에 위치한 플라스틱 용기를 파는 가게에서 전선이 합선되어 새벽 2시에 시작된 불이 벌집처럼 붙어있는 1502 가구의 가게들을 15시간동안 다 태어 버렸습니다.

Mercado Oriental 는 40년 된 중남미 에서 제일 큰 재래 시장입니다. 한 120 acres의 땅을 차지한 이 시장 안에 한 35,000 가구의 가게들이 따닥따닥 붙어있다고 합니다. 시장안의 길들이 너무 좁고 복잡해서 미국 시민권 자들은 미국 대사관에서 들어가지 못하게 금지구역이 될 만큼 위험한 그곳에 불이 났습니다. 한국에서만 보았던 땅을 치며 통곡하는 여인들의 모습을 이 나라에서도 처음으로 보았습니다. 슬픔을 이기지 못하여 옆에서 돕고 있는 사람들의 가슴을 치면서 소리치며 울고있는 상점 주인들의 모습을 보면서 제 자신도 흘러나오는 눈물을 막지 못했습니다. 평생 모은 자신들의 재산이 하루 아침에 연기와 함께 사라진 그들의 앞에 정말 소망이 어디있을까 하면서 한숨이 저절로 나왔습니다.

가난한 나라임을 다시 한번 느꼈습니다. 소방관들의 옷에는 도네이션을 준 미국 소도시들의 이름들이 적혀있었습니다. 제대로 된 소방차들도 없어 물이 이곳 저곳으로 세는 호스들를 가지고 불을 끌려고 하는 그들의 모습을 보면서 또 울었습니다. 모든것이 다 슬프고 서글펐습니다. 짜증이 났습니다. 화가 났습니다. 하나님한테...

앞으로 우리 사역장에서 할일들이 더 많아진 듯 합니다. 몇주동안은 그들을 어떻게 돌보아야 하나를 궁리하고, 밥도 200명이 아닌, 더 많이 준비를 해야겠다고 생각했습니다. 아무래도 더 많은 사람들이 도움을 찾을 듯합니다. 기도해 주십시요. 가게를 잃은 자들에게, 그 것으로 인하여 직장을 잃은 자들 위하여. 그래도 사망한 자가 없음에 감사하고, 이 일을 통하여 그 지저분하고 위험한 이곳에 정부의 관심이 주어지기를 소망합니다.더욱 더 안전한 시장으로 만들어 지는 기회가 되기를 바랍니다. 이 어려운 기간을 통하여 우리 사역장이 하나님의 사랑을 더욱 많이 전하는 도구가 되기를 바랍니다. 기도해 주십시요. 우리 니카라과 형제, 자매들이 주님안에서 잃었던 소망을 찾을수 있도록.

Thank you to all of you who responded to our urgent prayer request during the Mercado Oriental fire on Friday. I received a phone call from a friend at 7 on that morning who was worried about our homeless and the medical centers at the Mercado. I turned the television on as soon as I heard about the fire and felt my heart stop beating for awhile as I watched the catastrophe taking place at the familiar place.

It was indeed heartbreaking to watch the men and women whose entire life saving go up in the smoke, literally. The fire started, according to some sources, around 2 a.m. inside a plastic store where the electrical short circuit caused the fire. That store is located on the same street as our centers, but two blocks down. The wind then carried the fire into the next stores, which are all situated like honeycombs in a beehive. The fire lasted 15 hours, with some 1200 firemen and policemen working all night and all day on Friday. It was exhausting just watching it on t.v., crying as I watched the fire engulf so many stores. The owners were devasted by what they cannot recover. None of the stores carried insurances, so indeed everything is totally lost.
In the end, some 1502 stores were burned down and over $100 million dollars have been lost. Mercado Oriental, which is the largest open market in Central America, takes up about 120 acres of land where all kinds of merchants operate their businesses daily. Some 50,000 people visit there daily, according to a local newspaper. Over 12 acres have been damaged. However, no life was taken, and for that we are all thankful.

Please continue to pray for those families that lost their businesses and those employees who have lost their livelihood. I am sure in the weeks to come, our centers will need to take care of more people. We pray that through our Hope Center, God's hope will be delivered to them.
